Abstract:
To provide a liquid crystal element from which light with a particular wavelength is extracted.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal element according to an embodiment includes a first transparent substrate having a first inner surface and a first outer surface, a first orientation film disposed on the first inner surface, a second transparent substrate facing the first transparent substrate and having a second inner surface and a second outer surface, a second orientation film disposed on the second inner surface, and a first liquid crystal layer existing between the first orientation film and the second orientation film and cured with the orientation direction of liquid crystal molecules fixed. The first liquid crystal layer contains a first cholesteric liquid crystal, and has a reflection surface that reflects a first circular polarizing light with a first wavelength among incident light having transmitted the first outer surface. A first spiral axis of the first cholesteric liquid crystal is inclined in a uniform direction in the entire first liquid crystal layer. The first outer surface and the second outer surface form an interface that totally reflects the first circular polarizing light reflected on the first liquid crystal layer.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
