Abstract:
To provide a liquid crystal material not exerting an electro-clinic effect, but having a wide temperature range for exhibiting a smectic A phase.
This liquid crystal material includes a liquid crystal material-containing liquid crystal layer 30 disposed between the TFT array substrate 10 and the opposite substrate 20, in which at least one hydrocarbon portion of the both terminal groups is a branched hydrocarbon portion, so that a temperature range in which a smectic A phase is exhibited becomes wider than in the case where the hydrocarbon portion is an unbranched (straight chain-shaped) hydrocarbon portion. The liquid crystal material does not exert an electro-clinic effect, but exhibits a smectic A phase in a wide temperature range.
