PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal material with a large capacity for spontaneous polarization and an improved speed of response by using a compound of a specified structural formula as the constituent.
CONSTITUTION: A (+) or (-)perfluoro-2-propoxypropionic acid is treated with thionyl chloride and then reacted with hydroquinone to give a hydroquinone ester (A). Separately, 4-hydroxy-4'-biphenylcarboxylic acid is reacted with an alkyl halide and then treated with thinyl chloride to give a 4-alkoxy-4'- biphenylcarboxylic acid chloride (B). A liquid crystal material of formula I (wherein C* is an asymmetric carbon atom; R is 1-20C alkyl; l, m, and n are each 0 to 1; groups of formulas II to IV are each a benzene ring, a cyclohexane ring, a bicyclooctane ring, a pyrimidine ring, a dioxan ring, or a substituted derivative thereof; X1 and X2 are each a single bond, -COO-, -OCO-, -CH=N-, -N=CH-, azo azoxy, -CH=CH-, -CH2CH2-, -CH2O- or -OCH2-) is obtained by, e.g. reacting component A with component B. 0.5-80% liquid crystal material thus obtained is mixed, if necessary, with other liquid crystal material showing a chiral smectic C phase to give an objective liquid crystal composition.
