Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal medium having stability against heat or light, a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range, and extremely great dielectric anisotropy and developing an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase, and to obtain various optical elements which can be used in a wide temperature range and show short response time, a large contrast ratio, and a low drive voltage.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition is provided, which comprises an achiral component T including at least one compound 1 expressed by formula (1), and a chiral agent, and which develops an optically anisotropic liquid crystal phase. In formula (1), Rrepresents hydrogen or, for example, an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; L, L, L, L, L, L, and Leach independently represent hydrogen or fluorine; Xrepresents, for example, a halogen; and n11 is 0 or 1.
