To provide a liquid crystal optical element capable of alleviating characteristic deterioration due to leakage of an electric field.
The liquid crystal optical element includes a first substrate having a plurality of transparent band electrodes formed so as to compose a group for each prescribed region; a second substrate having a transparent common electrode; and a liquid crystal layer arranged between the first substrate and the second substrate, and in which a retardation distribution is controlled for each prescribed region by a voltage applied between the common electrode and the band electrodes. Between the first substrate and the second substrate, a wall-like spacer is provided to a part corresponding to a boundary of the prescribed region. At least one of the two wall surfaces of the spacer is provided with a shielding electrode to which a constant voltage is applied.
