Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide a liquid detector which can be easily installed and handled and detect a liquid with high accuracy and, at the same time, a level gauge which can detect the very small movement of a liquid level with high accuracy. CONSTITUTION:Light 25A from an LED 25 is made incident on the face 21 of a prism 20 which is in contact with a liquid 2 at a prescribed incident angle and the totally-reflected light 26A of the light 25A from the part of the prism which is not in contact with liquid 2 due to the difference in refractive index between vapor and liquid is detected by means of a phototransistor 26. Since the quantity of the reflected light 26A varies in accordance with the contact area of the face 21 with the liquid 2, namely, height of the liquid level 2A, the height of the liquid level 2A can be detected from the value of the electric current generated in the transistor 26 in accordance with the quantity of light. Since the detection of the liquid level 2A utilizes the total reflection of the light 25a, even a very small change in the liquid level 2A can be detected with high accuracy.
