Title:
LIQUID RESISTOR FOR PROTECTING SUPERCONDUCTING COIL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2535769
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To increase the minimum safety factor of the superconducting coil of an electric circuit using a dip-cooling type superconducting coil against the withstand voltage without changing the design of the coil by connecting a battery filled up with an electrolyte in parallel with the coil as a protective resistor.
CONSTITUTION: An electrolyte tank 7 is constituted in such a way that semicylindrical parts at both ends of the tank 7 are connected with each other through a passage having a narrow cross section. One end of the tank 7 is composed of a semicylindrical anode 8 and an anode terminal 9 is electrically connected to the anode. A semicylindrical cathode 10 is provided at the other end of the tank 7. At the time of using such a liquid resistor as the protective resistor of a dip-cooling type superconducting resistor, the resistor is connected so that an electric current can flow in the direction in which the charging process of this battery can be utilized. Immediately after making quench- protecting operations, the final temperature of a hot spot becomes 111 K as in the case where a constant resistor is used. The minimum safety factor becomes 9.81 which is larger than the minimum safety factor, 8.93, obtained when the constant resistor is used by 9.8%.
