PURPOSE: To effectively control vibration of a structure followed by bending and centrifugal distortion by forming a liquid column pipe, which was formerly formed in a U-shape, in an inverted U-shape (portal shape) in a liquid tank, in a liquid type damping device used to control vibration of a superstructure on a ship's hull or a multistoried building on land.

CONSTITUTION: In an inverted U-shape tank formed of a pair of vertical type tank parts 5b and 5b' and a horizontal communication tube 5a to communicate the upper parts of these vertical type tanks with each other, turndown tank parts 10 and 10' communicated respectively with the lower parts of the pair of vertical type tanks 5b and 5b' are provided, and liquid 3 is filled in an inverted U-shape type tank 5, and free level of the liquid 3 in the turndown tank parts 10 and 10' is formed in the lower part than the horizontal communication tube 5a. Thereby, movements B and D of the liquid 3 in the right and left vertical type tank parts 5b and 5b' become to act as a damping moment such as to carry out damping in the same direction as the damping carried out by a movement C of the liquid 3 in a part of the horizontal communication tube 5a against a damping object 1.
