Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To directly more inexpensively obtain oxygen-containing compounds of high added value including dihydric phenols in high yield from coal through no coal tar route, and to convert the coal to high-BTU modified coal or coal- water-oil slurry. SOLUTION: This method for modifying low-grade coal comprises the following processes: in a reaction step 26, low-grade coal 20 is thermally hydrolyzed in subcritical or supercritical water at 10-40 MPa and 200-550 deg.C to obtain a decomposition product; in a separation step 36, water-soluble substances, residues 28 and water-insoluble oils 29 are then separated from the above decomposition product; in a water-soluble substances recovery step 37, oxygen-containing compounds 27 based on dihydric phenols comprising catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone or a mixture thereof are subsequently recovered from the above water- soluble substances; and the above residues and water-insoluble oils are converted to modified coal 32 or coal-water-oil slurry 34.
