PURPOSE: To obtain a lubricating oil composition having excellent antifriction, antiwear and extreme pressure characteristics by incorporating in a lubricating oil an amine phosphate obtained by reacting a specific phosphate with a specific amine.
CONSTITUTION: This composition is prepared by blending a major portion of a lubricating oil and a minor portion of an amine phosphate containing a terminal imide ring comprising a reaction product, obtained under conditions for the formation of an amine salt by neutralizing at least one acidic functional group, of a phosphate corresponding to formula I (wherein (n) is 1 or 2; R1 is a 1-32C hydrocarbon; and R6 is H or a 1-200C hydrocarbon) with an amine corresponding to formula II or III [wherein R3 to R5 are each H or a 1-60C hydrocarbon; Z is O or NR7 (where R7 is H or a 1-60C hydrocarbon); R3 and R7 may form a heterocyclic ring; R2 is H or a 1-4C hydrocarbon; (p) is 1 or more; (m) is 0-10; D to G are each a 2-6C hydrocarbon; (a) is 1-60; (b) and (c) are each 0-50; and a+b+c is 1-60]. Generally, the amount of the amine phosphate to be added is 10-250,000 grams per ton of the lubricating oil.
