To provide a lubricant excellent in compatibility with ammonia and good in stability and lubricating properties as well as excellent practical performances.
The lubricant for a refrigerator utilizing ammonia as a refrigerant comprises a polyether compound represented by general formula (1): X{- O-(AO)n-H}p or (2): X{-O-(AO1)a-(AO2)b-H}p and an additive selected among antioxidants, wear-proofing agents and metal inactivating agents. In the formulae, X is a residue formed by removing a hydroxyl group from a monool or a polyol; (AO)n is a polyoxyalkylene chain obtained by copolymerization of EO with a 3C or higher alkylene oxide and the number of a secondary hydroxyl group is at least 50% of the number of all terminal hydroxyl groups; (AO1)a is a polyoxyalkylene chain formed by copolymerization of EO with PO and/or BO; and AO2 is a 3C or higher oxyalkylene group.
