To provide a lubricant which is more excellent in the various kinds of performances required according to its use than those of conventional lubricants.
This lubricant comprises an alkoxylate of a higher sea-alcohol expressed by the formula [wherein, R1 and R2 are each an alkyl group, the sum total of the number of carbon atoms of R1 and that of R2 is 7-29 and also the number of carbon atoms of R2 is not less than that of R1 (the number of carbon atoms of R1 that of R2); A is a lower alkylene group; and n is on average 1-300. But, when n is 2 or more, the number of kinds of an oxyalkylene group expressed by AO may be one or more, and when the number of kinds of the oxyalkylene group is 2 or more, the number of kinds of various alkylene groups is on average n in all.], which alkoxylate contains the alkoxylates of higher sec-alcohols consisting of 30-90 mol% of an alkoxylate (X) of the higher sea-alcohol with R1 of a methyl group and 70-10 mol% of an alkoxylate (Y) of the higher sec-alcohol with an alkyl group of R1 of the number of carbon atoms of 2 or more.
