Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a lubricating oil additive excellent in heat and oxidation resistances and having high practical value by using a polyphenyl thioether expressed by a specific formula as a main component.
CONSTITUTION: This additive contains a polyphenyl thioether of the formula [R1 to R3 are each H or 1-24C hydrocarbon; (x), (y) and (z) are each 1-4; (m) is 0, 1 or 3], preferably a monoalkyl m-triphenyl thioether as a main ingredient. Furthermore, e.g. a thiophenol metal salt such as sodium thiophenolate are reacted with a m-dihalobenzene such as m-dibromobenzene in the presence of a copper catalyst such as a cuprous oxide catalyst in a polar solvent such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone at 160-210°C and the resultant m-triphenyl thioether is preferably reacted with an α-olefin in the presence of a Lewis acid such as boron fluoride.
