Abstract:
To provide a method for stably producing 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxabenzoic acid in high yield.
This method for producing 3,5-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid comprises the step (1) where a 2,6-di-t-butylphenol containing 0.5 % or less of 3,3',5,5'-tetra-t-butyl-4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl is provided; the step (2) where a basic alkali metal compound is allowed to react with an excessive amount, based on the basic metal compound, of 2,6-di-t-butylphenol to prepare an alkali metal salt of 2,6-di-t-butylphenol; and the step (3) where the alkali metal 2,6-di-t-butylphenolate obtained in the step (2) is allowed to react with carbon dioxide to produce 3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid.
