PURPOSE: To withstand against not only rolling wear but also sliding wear by providing at least one PVD cover layer made of a sliding bearing material on the working surface of a rolling member which receives sliding stresses, and making the thickness of the layer about equal to the dimension of the surface roughness of a base material.
CONSTITUTION: A gear is made from surface-hardened steel, is then carbonized up to a depth of a few tenth of millimeters, and is further contour-ground thereafter. The thickness of this layer 6 is selected to attain a dimension about equal to the maximum height 4 of a carbonized base material 2. Next, the layer 6 is subjected to PVD method using cathode-ray sputtering to form a coupled body consisting of the hard base material 2, a rolling wear contact area 3 with the intervention of a primary carbide 5, and an AlSn20Cu layer 6 where tin droplets 7 are finely dispersed in an aluminum alloy matrix 8 located over the region 3. The layer 6 shows a weight ratio of 80:20:1 for Al, Sn, and Cu corresponding to the composition AlSn20Cu1, contains less than 0.2 wt.% oxides, and has an average particle diameter of about 0.3 μm and a hardness of 113HV0.002.
