This method is for preparing a polymeric brush substrate to use for a solid state synthesis of a polymer. This method comprises (a) a process for providing a substrate with which one or more free radical initiators are bonded by a covalent bond, wherein each of the free radical initiators has a radical-forming site at a distant position from the substrate, and (b) a process for forming a polymeric brush by bringing the covalent bonded substrate into contact with a monomer under a condition promoting free-radical polymerization from the radical-forming site of the initiator.
