A lubricant layer 3 consisting of a fatty acid, which has the molecular weight of ≥150 to ≤350 and has the contents of ≥0.5mg/m2 to ≤2mg/m2 on the opposite side surface, and a fatty acid ester, which has the molecular weight of ≥200 to ≤600 and has the cobtents of ≥0.4mg/m2 to ≤4mg/m2 on the opposite side surface, is formed on the opposite side surface to the surface of a non-magnetic supporting body 1 on which a magnetic layer 2 is formed. A process for obtaining a magnetic coating material by kneading the fatty acid and the fatty acid ester with a magnetic material and a process for forming the magnetic layer 2 by applying the magnetic coating material on the non-magnetic supporting body 1 and drying are provided. As a result, the magnetic recording medium prevented from being powdered at the time of sliding with the fixed guide or the like, reduced in dropout and improved in durability is obtained.
