PURPOSE: To realize reproduction of data with high S/N and to obtain high track density like an optical recording medium by using such a medium having light-reflecting layer and light-transmitting layer, recording data with a magnetic head, and reproducing data using both of Kerr effect and Faraday effect as magneto-optical effect.
CONSTITUTION: A nonmagnetic substrate 11 comprising an Al alloy and Ni-P plating which is generally used is covered with an intrasurface-magnetization soft magnetic film 12 or with a nonmagnetic film such as Ti for controlling crystallinity, on which the film 12 is formed. The film 12 has an effect to increase the efficiency of a recording head and effect to stabilize magnetization of a first magnetic layer 13 to be formed thereon. Then the first magnetic layer 13 comprising Co-alloy thin film such as Co-Cr having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is formed on the film 12. Then a second magnetic layer 14 is formed directly on the film 13 or on a light-transmitting, nonmagnetic intermediate layer provided on the film 13. The second magnetic layer is soft magnetic and light-transmitting, comprising Bi- substd. garnet magnetic thin film. In recording with the medium thus obtained, a single magnetic pole head 2 comprising a main magnetic pole 21 and coil 22 is used, while on reproducing data, an optical head 3 disposed in the same side of the medium as the magnetic head is used.
