PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium with a superior electromagnetic conversion characteristic by using a binder resin containing a minute and easily-dispersed spindle-type metal magnetic powder and a functional group in a magnetic layer.
CONSTITUTION: A magnetic layer where a metal magnetic powder is dispersed in a binder resin is provided on a non-magnetic support. The metal magnetic powder is an easily dispersed spindle-type metal powder with an average long axis diameter of 0.10 to 0.20μm, an axis ratio of 4 to 8, an area/weight ratio SBET of 38 to 51m2, a coercive force Hc of 1,400 to 1,800 Oe, an amount of saturation magnetization σs of 110 to 140emu/g, and a water content of 0.2 to 1.2wt.%. The binder resin contains a resin with a functional group which is selected from a group consisting of -OH, -COOM, -(CO)2OO -PO(OM)2, -OPO (OM)2,-SO3M, and -OSO3M, where M indicates H, Li, Na, or K.
