PURPOSE: To improve corrosion resistance, wear resistance and recording and reproducing characteristics by forming a ferromagnetic Co oxide film on a magnetic recording layer consisting of an Fe magnetic metal.
CONSTITUTION: The lower magnetic recording layer 2 consisting of the Fe magnetic metal and the upper magnetic recording layer 3 consisting of the ferromagnetic Co oxide film are formed on one surface of a non-magnetic substrate 1. An alloy contg. Fe at a low ratio is slightly disadvantageous in terms of a material cost in addition to a decrease in Bs and therefore the Fe magnetic metal consisting of the Fe alone or ferromagnetic alloy contg. 25% Fe is used. The Co oxide film 3 is formed by depositing Co by evaporation or ion plating the same in the presence of dilute oxygen or sputtering Co in an inert gas contg. oxygen.
