PURPOSE: To improve running property, to prevent the deterioration in an electromagnetic conversion characteristic and to improve the contact characteristic with a magnetic head by incorporating the diketone expressed by the general formula into a magnetic layer in the stage of providing the magnetic layer dispersed with ferromagnetic powder into a binder on a non-magnetic substrate.
CONSTITUTION: The diketone expressed by the general formula R1-CO-CO=R2 is incorporated into the magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium to be used for a recording tape, video tape, floppy disk, etc. In the formula, either of R1 and R2 is a satd. or unsatd. chain aliphat. hydrocarbon group of 9W23C and the other is a similar hydrocarbon of 5W23C. The content of the diketone is made ≥0.01wt% by 100pts.wt. ferromagnetic powder or specified within a 0.02W5pts.wt. range. A fatty acid having carbon atoms within a 12W22 range and ester of said acid and aliphat. alcohol having carbon atoms within a 1W5 range are incorporated into the medium.
