A gradient coil assembly includes a primary gradient coil set 22a including an array of conductive loops for forming a gradient magnetic field along three orthogonal axes by being adjacently arranged in an inspection area 14 and a secondary shield gradient coil set 22b arranged between the primary gradient coil assembly 22a and a main magnet 12, the secondary shield gradient coil set 22b includes an array of conductive loops, and electric current density flowing in this array generates magnetic flux density interacting with magnetic flux density formed by a primary magnetic field to substantially zero net magnetic flux density outside of an area demarcated by secondary shield gradient coil set 22b.
