PURPOSE: To expand functions of VTR by determining an arrangement configuration so that frequency multiplex signals of FM brightness signals and low-band converted chromaticity signals which have different contents are recorded and reproduced by two heads differing in gap azimuth angle.
CONSTITUTION: A video signal inputted from an input terminal 1a is passed through a BPF 8a to extract a chromaticity signal component, whose burst amplified is made constant by an ACC circuit 9a. Its output is applied to a frequency modulator 10a simultaneously with the gain control of the ACC circuit 9a and then processed by balanced modulation with a signal from a conversion subcarrier oscillator 11a and low-band conversion. The resulting signal is supplied to an LPF 12a to remove frequency components overlapping with a last luminance FM-modulated signal and applied to an adder 13a, whose output is recorded on a magnetic tape 30 through an EP plus head 25 and an EP minus head 28. Further, an audio signal from an input terminal 15, on the other hand, has its high frequency range emphasized by a noise reduction circuit 16 and is modulated by an FM modulator 17 into an FM modulated signal and this signal is recorded on the magnetic tape 30 through an A plus head 24 and an A minus head 27 after unnecessary side-band waves are removed by a BPF 18.
