PURPOSE: To reduce the size of a recording and reproducing device, to carry out recording by modulating the output of semiconductor laser and to overwrite continuous information at a high transfer rate.
CONSTITUTION: Two light spots 5, 6 are projected from one object lens, the spot 5 is used for recording and the spot 6 for erasing. The intensity of the light spot 5 for recording is modulated to a binary code in accordance with information to be recorded and the direction of a magnetic field applied is changed over on the basis of magnetic field switching information recorded in a medium. At the time when the light spot 5 for recording passes through a part erased by the light spot 5 for erasing, a magnetic field is applied in a direction reverse to the direction of a magnetic field applied at the time when the light spot 6 for erasing passes.
