PURPOSE: To replace a main cable efficiently in a short time by stopping a cage in such a manner that the upper part of a balance weight is located in the nearly same position as the upper part of the cage or higher by a predetermined dimension than the upper part of the cage.
CONSTITUTION: After an operator 13 rides on a cage 9 and stops the cage 9 so that the upper part of a balance weight 16 is located in the nearly same position as the upper part of the cage 9 or higher by a predetermined dimension than the upper part of the cage 9, he sets the adjusting allowance of a main cable holding rod 15 to the maximum. Next, he runs the cage 9 and stops it at the stop on the uppermost story. Under such a condition he measures a distance A between the balance weight 16 and a buffer. Also he measures the present length X of the existing main cable and determines a new distance B to figure out the length L of a new main cable. He again runs the cage 9 and stops it so that the upper part of the balance weight 16 is located at the nearly same position as the upper part of the cage 9 or higher by a predetermined dimension than the upper part of the cage 9.
