Cpds. of formula (I): (where R' is H or an amino protecting gp and R" is H or acyl or R' and R" together form a divalent amino-protecting gp; R2 is H or forms a protected COOH gp. the dotted lines represent a double boond in the 2, 3 or 3, 4 posn) and the 1-oxides of the ceph-3-em cpds., and salts of (I) with salt forming gps. are prepd. by decarbon ylation of the corresp. 3-formyl cpd. and opt removing N-protecting gps. and/or converting into other cpds. (I) and/or converting into salts and/or separating isomers Decarbonylation is pref. effected with a Pt group metal complex, esp (Ph3P)2PtCl2, (Ph3P)2(CO)IrCl, (Ph3P)3IrCl or (Ph3P)3RhCl, opt. in the presence of catalysts or activators, pref. in an inert solvent and an inert atmosphere at 10-150 degrees C. Cpds. (I) are antibiotics or inters for antibiotics.
