Abstract:
Prodn. of azides of formula (I) comprises reacting a clavulanic acid deriv., (II) with a source of azide ions, a phosphine PR1R2R3 and an azo-dicarbonyl cpd. (where R is opt. esterified carboxyl or carboxyl salts; R1-3 are alkyl or aryl; and R' is esterified carboxyl). Opt. the initial prod. is de-esterified to give (I; R = COOH) which may be converted to a salt. (I) are antibiotics and beta-lactamase inhibitors and also intermediates for similar cpds. with N3 replaced by NH2 or triazole ring. Process is simple and gives good yields, e.g. >=65%.
