Abstract:

To provide a manufacturing method of a carbon material for a secondary battery negative electrode having large discharge capacity.

In this method, a negative electrode carbon material is manufactured by graphitizing a mixture of boric compound and mesophase carbon pellets in which a weight ratio of the mesophase carbon to the free carbon is 2-20, or by covering a mixture of a carbonaceous material and boric compound with a packing material of ash content not more than 5%, then by turning on electricity, heating and graphitizing them. The mesophase carbon pellets are preferably obtained by heat-treating coal tar and/or pitch containing the free carbon 0.5-3 wt.%.
