PURPOSE: To obtain carbonyl sulfide with little lowering of purity due to the passage of operation time by reacting CO and S in vapor phase in a reactor at least the inner surface of which is made of special Cr-Ni alloy to maintain the high corrosion resistance of the reactor.
CONSTITUTION: In a method of manufacturing carbonyl sulfide by vapor phase reaction by maintaining a gaseous mixture of S and CO at an elevated temp., the reaction is carried out in a reactor at least the inner surface of which is made of special Cr-Ni alloy consisting of, by wt., 20W60% Cr, 40W65% Ni, 0W10% Mo, 0W4% Nb and/or Ta and 0W3% Fe. This reactor shows high corrosion resistance, and a lowering of purity of product carbonyl sulfide due to the passage of operation time is minimized in the reactor.
