To provide a manufacturing process of ceramic composite (CMC) articles in which thin plies are used to manufacture components having changes in contour and changes in thickness, and damage to the thin piles and the lay-up articles during handling and lay-up operations is prevented.
A scrim (thin supportive layer applied to the surface of a thin prepreg to improve its handling characteristics) is applied to the surface of a thin high temperature CMC prepreg ply to prevent damage to components during handling the thin piles and the lay-up operations. The scrim is a coarse or fine mesh of thin or heavy fiber applied as a reinforcement. The scrim can be a temporary removable structure or can be incorporated into the component as part of the thin ply. The structure and composition of the scrim is dependent upon the structure or the component to which the scrim is applied.
