Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a semi-gloss or non-gloss colored titanium having a matted surface capable of application even to a large-sized material by applying spark discharge machining to a metal titanium surface in an electrolytic bath containing transition metals and forming a colored film of titanium oxide containing the transition metals.

CONSTITUTION: A metal titanium material is electrically energized as an anode in an electrolytic bath and voltage is gradually raised. Then, an electric current runs from the surface of the titanium material, giving a spark and a spark discharge phenomenon appears. Concurrently therewith, a layer mainly comprising titanium oxide is formed on the titanium surface. And in such a spark discharge as aforesaid, a uniform and thick titanium oxide layer is formed on said surface, and works to mat the surface by fusing a part thereof. Also, transition metals are contained in the electrolytic bath and spark discharge machining is applied. As a result, chemical reaction on the titanium surface is finely controlled and the transition metals are taken into the lattice of titanium oxide, thereby giving various types of coloring.
