To make a deposition volume to an outer layer and a core bar even in the axial direction of a compound roll while completely eliminating an overflow of a molten metal for the outer layer from a refractory frame, when the compound roll is manufactured.
This is a compound roll manufacturing method wherein a molten metal for forming an outer layer 10 is filled in a void between a core bar 2 and, a cooling mold 7 and a refractory frame 5, which are coaxially surrounding the core bar 2, so that the outer layer 10 is deposited, solidified around the core bar 2 by repeating lowering of the core bar 2 and pouring of the molten metal for the outer layer in succession. In this case, a flux is sprayed over the molten metal for measuring a surface position of the metal with a non- contacting type measuring unit 16 via the flux thereof. Further, a surface position of the metal is measured via a fire resistant sheet 12 laid in advance over the flux so that pouring volume of the molten metal for the outer layer is controlled based on the measured value.
