PURPOSE: To manufacture a connecting rod excellent in the machinability, the fatigue property and the buckling property by executing the quenching after a steel stock is hot worked for plastic working, and executing the surface compression working such as shot blasting after the steel stock is cold worked for corrective formation.
CONSTITUTION: A steel stock whose martensitic transformation starting temperature is ≥600°C is hot worked to execute the plastic working to the connecting rod shape, and then, the quenching is executed. The steel stock has the composition consisting of, for example, by weight, 0.03-0.08% C, 0.15-0.35% Si, 1.2-1.6% Mn, ≤0.030% P, ≤0.035% S, 0.2-1.0% Cr, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and further containing 0.05-0.25% Pb, 0.001-0.03% B, ≤0.30% Cu, and ≤0.20% Ni. After the form correction of the formed steel stock is cold worked, the surface compression working such as shot blasting and shot peening is executed. This constitution provides the steel stock whose surface is of martensitic structure, and whose core is of ferritic + pearlitic structure or bainitic structure.
