PURPOSE: To obtain an esterified wood into which carboxyl groups are introduced at low cost by a simplified method in which an anhydrous polybasic acid is reacted with dried wood small chips for esterification without the use of a solvent in the reaction system at temperature higher than a specific temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Small wood chips are dried in a vacuum dryer, etc., to a moisture content of 5% or less. An anhydrous polybasic acid, e.g., succinic anhydride, etc., is added to the small wood chips and heated with stirring at temperatures higher than a reaction temperature of 60°C in such a way as to cause hydroxyl groups in such chemical components as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, etc., contained in the tissue of the wood chips to react with the anhydrous polybasic acid for a ring-opening and estrification reaction. An objective esterified wood whose side chains are introduced with active carboxyl groups can thus be obtained.
