Abstract:
PURPOSE: To manufacture an impact absorbing type steering shaft at a low cost, which can sufficiently lower collapse load and stabilize it low while its heat resistance and stiffness are sufficiently assured.
CONSTITUTION: The tip end section of a tubular outer shaft 12 in the inner circumferential surface of which female serration is formed, is engaged with the tip end section of an inner shaft on the outer circumferential surface of which male serration is formed. Next, the tip end sections of both the shafts 12 and 13 are plastically deformed over their diameters. After that, the outer shaft 12 and the inner shaft 13 are relatively displaced in the axial direction in such a way as to be moved on toward each other. The tip end section of a small diameter section 14 on the outer shaft 12 side is pressed in so as to be fitted in the base end section of a large diameter section 16 on the inner shaft 13 side. Simultaneously, the tip end section of the large diameter section 16 is pressed in so as to be fitted in the base end section of the small diameter section 14. Besides, the intermediate section of the small diameter section 14 is loosely engaged with the intermediate section of the large diameter section 16 relatively.
