MANUFACTURE OF INTERMETALLIC COMPOUND

PURPOSE: To easily manufacture the intermetallic compound excellent in strength with good efficiency by impregnating a metallic material in a molten state into a preform constituted of metallic fibers into a metallic composite body under pressure and subjecting it to heat treatment in the vicinity of the m.p. of the impregnated metal.

CONSTITUTION: A preform having a desired product shape is manufactured by at least one kind of metallic fibers or grains (the metals or alloys of Ti, Ni, Fe, Co, Mo, Nb or the like). A metallic material (Al, Mg, Cu or their alloys) in a molten state forming a desired intermetallic compound is impregnated into the preform under pressure (about 10 to 2000kgf/cm2) to manufacture a metallic composite body. The metallic composite body is held to the temp. in the vicinity of the m.p. in the impregnated metal for required time to execute alloying, by which an intermetallic compound having a stable compsn. is formed. In this way, the intermetallic compound having a desired product shape can easily be obtd. with good efficiency.
