Abstract:
PURPOSE: To reduce handling steps in assembling a large spheical tank by producing a composite plate blank and forming it into a spherical shape.
CONSTITUTION: Commercially available metal plates or partial sheets 1a, 1b, 1c of similar plane plates are welded together to produce a composite plate having an area larger than that of a standard metal plate. After a composite plate blank 1 is so produced, it is formed to a spherical shape adaptable to a part of a spherical tank. The composite plate is heated and formed between a projecting and recessed dies 4, 3, while each die 3, 4 has an overall open grid form, with the edges of the grid walls 13 contouring a desired shape. Thus, a forming force can be easily controlled from outside in an open space.
