Title:
MANUFACTURE OF METAL COATED OPTICAL FIBER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH06305784
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To surely perform the electrolytic plating at a high plating rate even at the time of using a plating substrate having high electric resistance by performing the electroplating after carrying out the plating pretreatment of the surface of a carbon layer at the time of electroplating the optical fiber which is obtained by forming the carbon layer on the fiber after meltspinning the preform into the fiber.

CONSTITUTION: The metal coated optical fiber is manufactured by forming a metallic layer on the surface of the optical fiber consisting of the core for transmitting light and the clad which is provided on the periphery of the core so as to encircle it and has a specified refractive index lower than that of the core. At this time, the preform consisting of the core and the clad is meltspun by heating and melting into fiber and thereafter a carbon layer is formed on the fiber. Then the plating pretreatment of the surface of the carbon layer for the electroplating is carried out and thereafter the electroplating is performed. As the pretreatment for the electroplating, at least one process selected from the cleaner, predipping, catalyst and accelerator process is used. As the electroplating process, at least one process selected from the strike plating and electrolytic plating process is used.
