Abstract:
A process for the preparation of a nitrile of the formula R-(CN)n' wherein R represents an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical or an optionally substituted 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic radical which may additionally be fused with a benzene ring and n' represents 1 to 6 which comprises contacting a carboxylic acid of the formula R-(COOH)n' wherein R and n' have the meanings given above with cyanogen chloride and/or cyanogen bromide at a temperature in the range of 100 DEG to 300 DEG C.
