1334661 Terpene aldehydes MONSANTO CO 3 Jan 1972 [4 Jan 1971] 66/72 Heading C2C The invention comprises terpene aldehydes having the formula wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and R is an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms. They may be prepared by reacting a carboxyaldehyde of the formula with an aliphatic aldehyde of the formula R-CH 2 -CHO in a basic medium to form an aldol of the formula and dehydrating and hydrogenating the aldol to form the terpene. The compounds of the invention may be used in fragrance compositions.
