Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve the flatness degree of a connected end surface by polishing-processing the fiber end surface of an optical fiber by a grinding wheel which is formed by the mixing of the grinding grains selected from the group consisting of the cerium oxide grinding grains, chrome oxide grinding grains, zirconia grinding grains, and alumina grinding grains.
CONSTITUTION: The mechanochemical effect of cerium oxide is developed conspicuously in particular on a quartz group optical fiber 13. Accordingly, the fiber end surface 14 is formed to an uneven curved surface because of the strong mechanochemical action of the cerium oxide in single form. Accordingly, when the chrome oxide grinding grains, zirconia grinding grains, or alumina grinding grains are mixed by a prescribed quantity into the cerium oxide grinding grains, the physical polishing action is improved, and the mechanochemical effect of cerium oxide is suppressed to the necessary min. degree. Accordingly, the polishing efficiency is improved, preventing the formation of the uneven surface of the fiber end surface 14 after polishing, and the fiber end surface 14 is mirror-surface-finished.
