Abstract:
PURPOSE:To increase a difference of refractive indexes between an optical waveguide and an area for surrounding said waveguide by radiating a radiant ray for causing the bridge formation or the polymerization of a polymer to a selected area of a base substance forming material, swelling an exposure base substance forming material by using a solvent, and subsequently, drying it. CONSTITUTION:A base substance forming material 2 is applied onto a glass substrate 1, it is hardened, and subsequently, the base substance forming material 2 is exposed by ultraviolet rays through a mask 3. The base substance forming material whose exposure has been completed is processed by immersing it into a swelling liquid 5 consisting of a solvent which can swell comparatively well a polymer of an unexposed area of its material but can swell only a little a polymer of an exposed area. Subsequently, when the base substance forming material 2 which has been swollen is taken out of the swelling liquid and dried in order to eliminate the solvent, a base substance 6 provided with an optical waveguide 7 is obtained on the glass substrate 1. In this case, a difference of a degree of swelling is fixed after drying, and a density difference is generated. In such a way, the optical waveguide 7 having a large refractive index difference between a core and a clad is obtained.
