PURPOSE:To grow stably in the manufacture of an oxide single crystal, a polycrystal joined to a single crystal to a single crystal, by joining single crystaline piece with a polycrystal having the same composition heating and holding them under a specified atmosphere and temp. condition. CONSTITUTION:In the manufacture of a single crystal of a compound used for e.g., a magnetic head, ferrite single crystal pieces 1 are joined with a polycrystal 2 having the same composition as the ferrite singlecrystal 1. This joined pieces are held under an atmosphere of Ar or N2 and at higher temps. than the temp. that the polycrystl initiates the growth of a large crystal from the surface. The polycrystal grows to the single crystal 3 from the joined surfaces with the single crystal 1, and a single crystal 3, having a giant crystal particle which has grown from the surfaces of the polycrystal on the border line 4 is grown from the first seed single crystal. By this method, not only the ferrite, but also a quartz single crystal for oscillating element, and single crystals of compounds such as LiNbO3, LiTaO3 or the like for surface wave device can be easily obtd.
