To make it possible to manufacture a reflection-type hologram eliminating the need for matching liquid, generating less regular reflection noise, and having a high diffraction efficiency by specifying an interface reflective index.
Light beams 4, 6 are made incident on both surfaces of a hologram recording material 2, and polarization states of the light beams 4, 6 and incident angles are set properly. And, expressing an incident angle of these 1st and 2nd light beams 4, 6 forming with the hologram recording material 2 by θin, an angle between polarization plane of these 1st and 2nd light beams 4, 6 and a polarization plane of p-polarized light by θk, a transmittance of the hologram recording material 2 by t, and expressing interface reflective indices of S-polarized light and P-polarized light at the incident angle θin by Rs(θin) and Rp(θin) respectively, the interface reflective indices given by R(θin, θk, t)={Rs(θin).sin2θk+Rp(θin).cos2θk}.t should be set to 0.1 or less.
