PURPOSE: To prevent movement of the powder material effectively with the relative simple manufacture to prevent lowering of battery performance, and seal a battery in a sealed type lead-acid battery, in which the powder material is filled and the powder material is impregnated with the electrolyte practically.

CONSTITUTION: An electrode plate group, which consists of a positive electrode plate, a negative electrode plate and a separator, is inserted into a battery jar 1, and the powder material 3 having high porosity and a large specific surface area is filled in a clearance between the positive electrode plate and the negative electrode plate and in the surroundings of the plate group 2. This powder material 3 can hold a large quantity of the electrolyte strongly. Next, a hollow base 4, of which lower part is sealed by a porous plate 5 and which comprises a gas discharge valve in the upper thereof, is placed on the powder material 3. The plate 5 and the base 4 are bonded to each other without clearance, and a space 8 formed of the base 4 and the plate 5 passes gas and electrolyte but not the powder material 3. The resin liquid 7 is filled in the surroundings of the base 4 and is hardened to fix the base 4, fix the powder material 3 and make a battery airtight. Blow-up of the powder material 3 is thereby eliminated to seal the battery.
