{PG,1 Thiocarbamates are prepared by a process comprising reacting an aqueous solution of a thiocarbamate salt with an organic halide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a quaternary ammonium salt having the formula {PS {TI (R{HU 4{L R{HU 5{L R{HU 6{L R{HU 7{L N){HU {30 {L Y{HU {31 {PS {PS in which R{HU 4 {L and R{HU 5 {L are independently selected from the group consisting of C{HD 1{L {14 C{HD 25 {L alkyl and C{HD 2{L {14 C{HD 25 {L alkenyl, R{HU 6 {L and R{HU 7 {L are independently selected from the group consisting of C{HD 6{L {14 C{HD 25 {L alkyl and C{HD 6{L {14 C{HD 25 {L alkenyl, and Y{HU {31 {0 {L is an anion selected from the group consisting of chloride and bromide; and separating the thiocarbamate from the aqueous solution.
