To provide a manufacturing method of a base material for an optical fiber from which a highly-reliable optical fiber can be manufactured easily; and to provide a manufacturing method of an optical fiber by which a highly-reliable optical fiber can be manufactured easily.SOLUTION: A manufacturing method of a base material for an optical fiber includes a preparation step P1 for preparing a base material 1P for the optical fiber in which a cross-sectional shape perpendicular to a longer direction is a polygon, and a chemical mechanical polishing step P2 for chemically mechanically polishing a surface PS to be polished of the base material 1P for the optical fiber, by using slurry 110 having a polishing material 112 of a dielectric substance and an alkaline polishing material 111.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
