Abstract:
To provide a production method of an optical fiber preform capable of improving quality by avoiding generation of foreign materials in the interface between a core material and an outside layer in an optical fiber preform product having the core material made of an optical fiber preform processed by a glass lathe.SOLUTION: A production method of an optical fiber preform 3 includes a step for holding at least one end of an optical fiber preform 3 by a holding unit 7 and a step for processing the optical fiber preform 3 by heating and rotating the optical fiber preform 3. The optical fiber preform 3 is held by the holding unit 7 via a buffer material 8 belonging to the holding unit 7. The buffer material 8 has a member 9 on the side touching the optical fiber preform 3 and another member 10 on the side touching the holding unit 7. The member 9 on the side touching the optical fiber preform 3 has a different composition from the composition of the member 10 on the side touching the holding unit 7 and does not contain any of Ca, Mg, Al, K, Na, Mg, and Ba.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
