Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the initial loss in the inflator gas pressure, and improve the durability of an air bag cushion.
SOLUTION: A side air bag system comprises an air bag cushion 500 an inflator assembly 400. The cushion 500 includes a first panel 540 having a tether 541 with a plurality of vents 542 formed therein. The air bag cushion 500 comprises an upper chamber 504 and a lower chamber 505 across the tether 541. The inflator assembly 400 is disposed within the lower chamber 505. The tether 541 maintains the pressure so that the gas from the inflator 410 is emitted first to the lower chamber 505 followed by the upper chamber 504 since the shape of the air bag cushion 500 is kept substantially constant when the air bag is operated.
