To efficiently produce high purity zinc by electrolyzing zinc chloride generated as a by-product by a zinc reduction method and to produce silicon by the zinc.
A method of producing zinc comprises: a distillation step of obtaining purified zinc chloride by distilling crude zinc chloride; and an electrolysis step of electrolyzing purified zinc chloride to recover zinc, wherein metal zinc is added to the crude zinc chloride prior to the distillation step to have ≥2 mass% zinc content. A method of producing silicon comprises: a chlorination step of chlorinating crude silicon or a silicon compound to obtain silicon chloride; a silicon producing step of reacting silicon chloride with zinc to obtain silicon and crude zinc chloride; a distillation step of distilling and purifying the crude zinc chloride to obtain purified zinc chloride; and an electrolysis step of electrolyzing the purified zinc chloride to obtain zinc and chlorine, wherein zinc and chlorine obtained in the electrolysis step are recycled respectively in the silicon producing step and the chlorination step and metal zinc is added to the crude zinc chloride prior to the distillation step to have ≥2 mass% zinc content.
